Thando Mgqolozana’s A Man Who Is Not a Man Inspires Short Film iBhokhwe (Plus: Trailer)

A Man Who is Not a ManThe first chapter of Thando Mgqolozana’s book A Man Who is Not a Man, which deals with the controversial topic of botched traditional circumcision, has been adapted into a short film. iBhokhwe (The Goat). Directed by John Trengove, the film will make its debut at Berlinale in Berlin next week.

Trengove told Percy Mabandu of City Press that the 15-minute film developed out of research he’s done on gay men who had been through the initiation ritual. His research led him to Mgqolozana’s book, with whom he collaborated to create iBhokhwe. He hopes that it will lead to a full-length feature film.

A short film about gay identity and the horrors of botched circumcision at a Xhosa initiation school is on its way to one of the world’s leading film festivals.

iBhokhwe (The Goat) is based on the novel A Man Who is Not a Man, published by Thando Mgqolozana in 2009.

The book lifted the veil on Xhosa initiation, a brave move which was seen as breaking taboos.

Movie stills and comments from the producer and director have been tweeted from the iBhokhwe Twitter account:
