Film Adaptation of Fanie Fourie’s Lobola Wins Two Audience Choice Awards

Fanie Fourieâs LobolaAlert! Henk Pretorius’ film adaptation of Fanie Fourie’s Lobola by Nape ‘A Motana won the Audience Choice Award for Best Comedy at the 19th Annual Sedona International Film Festival, which was held in Arizona from 23 February 23 to 3 March.

Producers Lance Samuels and Kweku Mandela said that, “This is a highly regarded festival and the audience award is widely recognised as one of the most important awards of any festival, because the winning film is selected by the audience attending the festival rather than by a few members of a festival jury”.

This is the second award for Fanie Fourie’s Lobola, which also won the Jozi Film Festival Audience Award last month. The film is being screened in South Africa at the moment and Daniel Dercksen reviewed it for BizCommunity, saying that it carries a “message that transcends our borders”.

South African romantic comedy Fanie Fourie’s Lobola won the Audience Choice Award for Best Comedy at the 19th Annual Sedona International Film Festival in Arizona, the film’s director has said.

“Audience awards are among the best harbingers of a film’s success because they are decided on by regular cinema-goers,” Henk Pretorius said in a statement today.

Inspired visionary Henk Pretorius’ Fanie Fourie’s Lobola is a heavenly Romeo and Juliet fable that happily buries old worn-out issues and cliché’s and celebrates an optimistic New South Africa.

With heartfelt honesty, passion and catching wit, 30-year-old Pretorius knows how to tell a story that unites his upbeat age group with older generations whose futile views of life in South Africa are less hopeful. The three years he has invested in writing the screenplay with Janine Eser (inspired by Nape à Motana’ novel), is now paying off, big time. What makes a story truly original is not what you say, but how you express yourself, and with Fanie Fourie’s Lobola, Pretorius and his team deliver a refreshing and well-crafted film.
