Xhosa Circumcision: The Sunday Times Defends Mondli Makhanya

A Man Who is Not a ManResponding to last week’s column by Mondli Makhanya criticising Xhosa circumcision rituals – initiation rites that leave scores of boys dead each year – several South Africans defending the practice wrote in to the Sunday Times. But their complaints found no truck with public editor Thabo Lashile:

“In my opinion, Mr Makhanya’s comments are totally out of order and to me they amount to hate speech and could be seen to be inciting lawlessness, by effectively calling our tradition genocide.

“Mr Makhanya has taken it upon himself to adjudicate the practice of millions of Xhosa men who believe in their sacred traditions. This is strongly evident in the condescending tone and sarcasm of his article,” Qabaka writes.
