Towards Gender Equality with UKZN Press

South African Schools during the HIV and AIDS EpidemicSince the democratic elections in 1994, there have been concerted efforts to redress race and gender inequalities in South Africa. Learners and teachers have responded in their own ways to change and this nuanced analysis reveals their struggles to realise gender equality by living gender differently.

In distinguishing short-term interventions to change behaviour from institutional approaches which seek to transform school structures, Towards Gender Equality offers a new framework for understanding gender-equality initiatives. The book was compiled by an authorial team consisting of Robert Morrell, Debbie Epstein, Elaine Unterhalter, Deevia Bhana and Relebohile Moletsane.

About the Book

‘This important and highly readable book tackles the complex and thorny interrelationships between education, gender differences and the HIV and AIDS pandemic. This is a must-read for teachers, educators at all levels and administrators.’

- AnnMarie Wolpe, Chairperson of the Gender Equity Task Team

‘Towards Gender Equality is an important step towards understanding South Africa’s schools and South Africa’s struggle for gender justice in the time of AIDS. The sombre conclusions, streaked with hope, should be read by everyone concerned with sexuality, gender equality and education.’

- Raewyn Connell, University of Sydney and author of Masculinities and Schools and Social Justice

This sounds like a really important book. I hope they prescribe it as a setwork for all HDE students, and that these future teachers can integrate it into their teaching, because the 'struggle for gender justice' is far from resolved in SA. Good for Robert Morrell and his team.
